California may be the first to have a state-wide ban on plastic bags

On June 2, 2010 the California Assembly passed the amended AB 1998 bill that would forbid grocery stores, drugstores, convenience stores, and shops from providing plastic bags to customers. This bill would go into effect in January 2012, if it passes the Senate. Governor Schwarzenegger has already exclaimed his support for the bill and is ready to sign it. Support for the bill by the afore-opposing California Grocers Association greatly helped with the bill's passage in the Assembly.
